Adolf Liu

Flute | Piccolo | Department Head

Mr. Liu was trained at the Trinity College of Music, London, England, in the late 70’s. He obtained his Fellowship and Graduate Diploma with Honors. After his graduation, Mr. Liu furthered his studies with celebrated flautists such as the principal flautist of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward Beckett; principal flautist of the Convent Garden Orchestra, Harold Clark; and principal flautist of the BBC Concert Orchestra, William Bartlett. Mr. Liu returned to Hong Kong in the early 80s, where he then worked as a freelance musician. He frequently appeared as a soloist with orchestras and on television.

Mr. Liu moved to Vancouver in the 1990s. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Music Education at UBC. Since then, he has been hired as an elementary school music teacher in British Columbia for more than 27 years. In the early 2000s, Mr. Liu furthered his studies at SFU. He was awarded the Advance Diploma in Education specializing in Performing Art. At present, Mr. Liu has retired from his position as a full-time music director in two Surrey public elementary schools.

While Mr. Liu was working as a public-school music teacher, he was invited to join the BCCM as a faculty member in 1998. Later on, he was appointed as the Wind Department head. Mr. Liu’s flute students shine in their schools. Many of them were awarded the top musical prizes by their schools. Most recently being BCCM Student, Zaiden, who won a musical scholarship to enter U.Vic and the School District #42 Authority Scholarship for the Arts. Previous BCCM flute students have won the championship in the Kiwanis level 10 flute competition as well as achieved the highest provincial score for their Level 9 RCM Flute Exam with a 93.5.

Mr. Liu loves to inspire his students to further their musical careers. He had another student received a music scholarship from the University of Western Ontario in 2003, and a few others were accepted into the Capilano College, UBC, and U of Toronto music faculties. Mr. Liu’s teaching goal is to guide his flute students to explore the world of music, no matter if they want to be a professional or not. A number of his flute students have been enjoying his flute lessons for more than 10 years at BCCM.
