Performance Countdown (Pt.1)

Be it a recital or a festival, we all know that preparation for music performances begins months in advance. Here’s a suggested schedule you can use to make sure you’re on the path to a successful performance.

3 Months before Performance

Depending on the music grade, choose the piece(s) you want to perform at least three months to a year before your scheduled performance. This way, you will have plenty of time to practice and polish your piece(s)!

2 Months before Performance

This is your time to continue with quality practice

For larger/longer works, try breaking your composition down into smaller 8 or 16-measure sections and focus on mastering those. Avoid practicing the entire composition — it is the least effective way to practice.

1 Month before Performance

At this point, you should have your piece securely memorized. Securing your music memory will help prevent any memory slip-ups from happening when you perform.

To make the most out of your practice time, record your performance and listen to it. This will help highlight any trouble areas or details of your playing that you wouldn’t otherwise notice. You will get a better idea of how the music sounds when you are not focused on playing — you are now the audience.
