MUSIC LESSONS

Piano

Students can enroll in piano lessons from as early as 4 years old. In order for students retain what they learn, we believe that a strong foundation is essential, which is why we employ a traditional more reading-focused method of instruction. Students will use the conservatory grading system from Preliminary to the Diploma level. Learning to read music early on is the best foundation that students can build on. Other methods, such as the Suzuki method, which is a more listening-focused method of learning are also available.

Lesson Length

Lessons tend to range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the level of the student. A guideline for the length of lessons is:

Pre-Grade - Grade 2
30 Minutes

Grade 3 - Grade 6
45 Minutes

Grade 7 - Diploma
60 Minutes

Curriculum

The key to learning anything is to build a solid foundation! We believe that the most effective way of learning is a comprehensive approach consisting of five separate areas:

REPERTOIRE

TECHNIQUE

EAR TRAINING

SIGHT READING

THEORY

High School Credit

Students can receive high school credit upon completing their piano exams for Grade 6, 7, and 8. Certificates are given to students who pass their exams and can present their certificate as their Fine Arts Credit.

Jazz Piano

There are multiple styles of music to be learned. In addition to the classical genre of music, teachers at the British Columbia Conservatory of Music can also teach contemporary and jazz styles! If this is you, let us know and we will find the right teacher for you!
