MUSIC LESSONS
Strings
The British Columbia Conservatory of Music offers instruction in a range of string instruments, including violin, viola, and cello. Students may choose between traditional music-reading methods—which emphasize note reading, music theory, and technical development—or the Suzuki approach, which focuses on learning by ear, parent involvement, and early immersion, much like acquiring a first language. With two excellent approaches available, teachers can draw on elements from both methods and adapt them to suit each student’s individual learning style at the lesson.
Lesson Length
Lessons tend to range from 30 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the level of the student. A guideline, with some overlap, for the length of lessons is:
Pre-Grade - Grade 2
30 Minutes
Grade 2 - Grade 6
45 Minutes
Grade 6 - Diploma
60 Minutes
Curriculum
A strong foundation is essential to effective learning. At the British Columbia Conservatory of Music, we take a comprehensive approach that encompasses five key areas:

High School Credit
Students can receive high school credit upon completing their practical and theory exams for Levels 6, 7, and 8. Certificates are given to students who pass both their practical and theory exams and can present their certificate to their high school counsellor to obtain the Fine Arts Credit.
